Cantre'r Gwaelod

My work is inspired by the Ceredigion coast, and my latest paintings are a response to the legend of Cantre'r Gwaelod.

Cantre'r Gwaelod (translates as 'lowland 100') tells the story of the flooding of a kingdom in the lowlands of Cardigan Bay.  It was a rich and fertile land protected by sea gates,  When the land flooded during a storm, the palace of Gwyddno Garanhir known as Caer Wyddno was lost. Legend has it the bells can still be heard when the sea is quiet. This story is mentioned in the Black Book of Carmarthenshire (13th Century).

In my Paintings I am creating a connection between the ancient land that lies beneath the sea off Cardigan Bay and the world above, and convey a sense of the mysterious world that once existed here.

Some of these paintings are at the following galleries.

Sea and Slate Gallery, Llangrannog.

Newport Art Collective, Pembrokeshire.

Eastgate Creative Hwb, Pembroke.

Oriel Llandudoch, St Dogmaels.
